FAQ's

Why should I hire Brown Photography to create my wedding images?

Your wedding photographs are the most important photographs of your lives.  The images made will be the record of your lives starting out together, the images you will show your friends, family, children and grandchildren.  You need to make sure that you are completely comfortable with the photographers you hire.  No matter who you chose to create your wedding images, make sure you see that a photographer can create excellent photos from start to finish.  Anyone with a camera can get lucky every now and then.  We can give you the photographs you require from the beginning to the end.

What is “Portrait-Journalism”?

Portrait-Journalism is a style of wedding photography which blends together traditional yet creative posed portraits with a
photo-journalistic style, which emphasizes the capturing of candid moments.  This style seems to be what most couples find the most satisfying.

I want a lot of posed, traditional photographs.  Can you do this?

Our style is portrait-journalistic, and just as a painter can not paint like Picasso just for one day, we can not change our style just for one day.  If a more traditional style is more your taste, find a photographer who shoots in that style.  Our style is not for everybody and that’s OK.  Really.

What type of equipment do you use?

We use only professional 35mm style digital cameras and lenses.  In case you’re really interested, we use Nikon camera bodies including a D700 and D200 and lenses ranging from 14mm-300mm.  We also carry backup camera bodies to every wedding.

My digital camera produces really crummy pictures.  Are you sure that digital is the way to go?

We would not use digital equipment if the quality of the images were not incredible.  If you are unsure, we invite you to schedule a meeting with us and we will be glad to show you the awesome quality of our digital photographs.  Professional digital cameras and top-of-the-line lenses (in the right hands) can produce photographs that are equal to and even surpass that of film.  Also, with digital photography, you have many more possibilities to personalize your final images with various digital effects applied including sepia toning, black and white and selective color.

Do I need to choose between color and black and white photographs?

No!  Unlike in the film world, digital photography allows all images to be photographed in color and then altered in post-production to black and white or selective color with no reduction of quality.

Another photographer I talked to told me to be cautious of photographers
who give away or sell digital files or negatives.  Why is this?

There are two types of wedding photographers.  The first are photographers who charge a low base price and require you to purchase all your prints from them.  After you are locked into that photographer, you can end up paying lots and lots of money for even the smallest amount of prints.  They make a large portion of their money from selling you overpriced prints.
The second type of photographers, like us, are ones who charge for their time, vision and experience and allow you to create your own prints from any lab you choose.  This way you pick a style photographer that suits you and gives you the creative freedom to do whatever you like with your photographs.

How much time should I allow for pictures on my wedding day?

It all depends on what you want.  For formal groups before or after the ceremony, allow five minutes per group.  Also, please allow about 30 minutes for new bride and groom photographs following the ceremony.  Outside of that, if all you want are the candid photos, you will not need to work any additional time into your big day.  Just allow us to be there and record your celebration. Also, one thing that will help your wedding day flow as smooth as possible is to have as many of your posed photographs made before the ceremony starts.  It minimizes the time for formal photographs after the ceremony but before the reception.

How many pictures will you take?

However any it takes!  This is another benefit of digital.  Since you are not paying a per-roll price, 100 or 1000 photos all cost the same to you.  We will create photographs until we have captured all of your special moments.

Do I get to select the photos I will receive?

Yes, we offer proofing for Photo CD's, albums and prints.  All images are put into a password protected web gallery available through our website.  From there, you can select which photographs you want on your CD and for your prints.  The albums can be previewed online as well.  From the preview page, you can approve the album we design or recommend changes.

How long will I need to wait to get my photos?

It usually takes about about four weeks to edit all the photographs, about four weeks to design an album and about two weeks to receive prints and albums from the lab.  So, the short answer is approximately ten weeks after your wedding.  We say 90 days at the high end of average.  If you choose to select all the images for your Photo CD, album approval and prints using our online proofing then it takes about 90 days from the time you select your images.

Do you travel for weddings?

Absolutely!  If the North Carolina Sandhills area is not your ideal spot for your special day, we would enjoy traveling anywhere for your wedding!
